Story 19 - The Mugging of Dallin H. Oaks

One starry evening in 1970, Dallin Oaks was returning to his car where his wife June awaited him.

As he approached the vehicle, a thief emerged out of the darkness, brandishing a weapon pointed at President Oak’s chest.

The assailant demanded money, to which President Oak’s obliged with an empty wallet.

Agitated by the fruitless transaction, the thief ordered President Oak’s to forfeit his car keys.

Fearing for the safety of his wife, President Oaks denied him and refused to comply.

The thief grew more brazen, his desperation growing with every passing moment. 

As the thief raved, President Oaks saw an opportunity to seize the weapon.

Before he could act, a spiritual impression came in a flash: President Oaks knew that if he made an attempt at the weapon, he would overpower the young man and end his life in the struggle.

Instead, President Oaks remained stoic. 

The criminal, seeing that President Oaks could not be deterred, lost his nerve and fled into the night.

President Oaks’ actions preserved three lives that evening.

Even in the clamber of hysteria, in the dark of night, President Oaks could still hear the spirit. 

Even when he had everything to lose, he still chose peace.

And even in the face of losing his and his wife’s lives, he still trusted in the Lord.

And that is precisely what we will receive of President Oaks is called as the next leader of the church.

And with the same hand that I use to partake of the emblems of Jesus Christ, I will sustain Dallin Oaks as president of the church.
